Affirmation Lanterns

Filed under: Events — admin @ 9:30 am

January 9, 2005 - Affirmations! This is the ECS version of the New Year’s Resolution. Bring a paper lantern decorated with words expressing your ethical ideals for the coming year. We’ll put tea-lights inside and go around to talk about how we’re going to live these ideals.

On Ethical Affirmation Day, we are encouraged to reflect upon our values and on our relationships with others through which ideals come to light. How have you been working to strengthen your relationships and to build your ethical community? Where have you succeeded, and where are the areas that you need to develop? What would you like to work on in the coming year?

After you have time to reflect on these ideals, we are asking each person (who desires to participate) to construct a paper lantern. Just decorate your lantern, including the words expressing your affirmations for the coming year, and then bring it to the Sunday morning platform on January 9. We’ll light the candles inside the lanterns; then there will be a time for admiration, for sharing, for reaffirmation of our Ethical ideals and for playing with the dripping wax.

To make a lantern: Use any piece of paper (8x11 is big enough) and decorate it, whatever way you wish. You may cut designs in it, use paint, or just use colorful paper. Include words that describe your goals for next year. Then, just curve the paper around so the ends meet. Tape or glue the ends together. At the meeting we will place tea-lights inside and light them as each of us explains the thoughts behind the words on the lantern. Kids are welcome to make lanterns too. Families may choose to make one lantern or one for each person.

Arboretum Winter Walk

Filed under: Events — admin @ 10:30 am

Meet At Talmadge Hamilton House with a sack lunch.  Camp Long is closed so instead we will drive over for a winter walk at the Arboretum at 10:30am. If the weather is REALLY bad (sleet with blinding rain or snow, 50mph winds, and below zero temperatures — all combined) we will conduct a current events meeting.

Bring warm clothes and good shoes!

Location: Meet at Tallmadge Hamilton House, from there drive to the U.W. Arboretum
Time: 10:30am
