Upcoming Ethical Action Day on Nov. 5th

Ethical Action Day

November 5 , 10a.m.-1p.m.

We’re joining Heron Habitat Helpers at the Kiwanis Wildlife Corridor to help restore habitat for the Seattle City Bird. We have helped with two of these work parties and they usually involve weeding invasive plants, planting natives, weeding, and mulching. All are welcome, including kids.

For more information on the group and their work, go to :
http://heronhelpers.org

This site has a map and description of the Kiwanis Wildlife Corridor.
We have all enjoyed working at these parties in the past. Just remember to come prepared for mud and thorns. Bringing your own gardening tools is not necessary but helpful. Snacks are provided. Please RSVP to amy@EthicalCultureSociety.org and then we can let Heron Habitat Helpers know how many of us are coming. Hope to see you there!

Black Freethinker Hubert Harrison

Filed under: Events — admin @ 10:00 am

Presented By: Guest Speaker Pat Innis

Time: 10:30am (Doors open at 10:00am for chat and coffee)
Location:

Tallmadge Hamilton House
5225 15th Ave NE
Seattle, WA 98105

“Hubert Henry Harrison: Obscure but Influential
African-American Freethinker.”

During the Harlem Renaissance a number of talented and
unique figures rose to the fore. Among the most
celebrated at that time was Hubert Henry Harrison.
Although largely forgotten today, even among
freethinkers, Harrison influenced many significant
figures such as Marcus Garvey and Joel Rogers, the
latter being a primary contributor to the formation of
the concept we now term multiculturalism.

Pat is an amateur journalist who has had his works
published in the Tri-Communities Newspaper in Seattle,
The Examiner: the newsletter of the African Americans
for Humanism, the Humanists of Washington’s Secular
Humanist Press, and Free Inquiry. While living in his
home town of St. Louis, Pat served for a while as
president of The Rationalist Society, and also the
editor of their newsletter, Secular Subjects. During
that same period he also produced the local access
cable TV program “Freethinking 101″.

A quick update

Filed under: General Announcements — admin @ 11:01 am

All,
Gloria pointed out to me that the “Sunday Meetings” page said we only meet the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. This was a mistake — we are now meeting every Sunday, with doors opening at 10:00am.

I’ve updated the website. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thanks for the note, Gloria!

If anyone finds any other typos like that, please let me know.

Thanks,
Derek

Social Game Day

Filed under: Events — admin @ 10:00 am

This is a new meeting format that we’re testing out this season. It is very loosely modelled after the Mormon’s “Family Home Evening”. It is a time set aside especially for quality time, enjoying one-another’s company. Either play a game, or just hang out and chat with other like-minded individuals. The focus is on building stronger personal relationships within our group, by providing a relaxed environment where people can share time and have fun together.

Planned family-friendly activities include:

Pool (in the Downstairs Game Room)
Dance Dance Revolution (a kid-friendly video game, played by dancing)
Unit blocks (for the small ones to play on)
Chess, checkers, cards, other games as available

We’ll have snacks and music. (This meeting is less formalized than our regular Sunday presentations.)
