Lately torture has been a hot topic in the news. Reports about Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, the CIA’s “black ops” torture centers in non-Western countries, the ACLU’s lawsuit against the CIA for “torture flights”, John McCain’s recent legislation to ban torture (and George Bush’s vow to veto it), and the “School of the Americas” represent a disturbing trend in our society’s interpretation of what constitutes an unreasonable search and seisure.
This week there will be a reading from a recent report, followed by a presentation and then a moderated discussion.
The Sunday School will be available for the kids (with a program that is not related to torture).
Reading: “What We’ve Lost”, by William Pfaff, read by Derek Simkowiak
Presentation: Peter Orth

This time of year, Ethical Culture Society of Puget Sound always picks an organization to assist as a group with some needed items. For the past several years, it has been New Beginnings Women’s Shelter. This year we have picked a specific family to assist. More information is below.
Please look over the list and pick an item (or two) that you think you can provide. We are asking everyone to sign-up for an item, so we can cover the list as completely as possible. Sign-ups can be done at the meetings or through the web site (within a day or two). We ask that you bring your items by the meeting on the December 18th at the latest. I hope you can participate and get your family and friends to participate. This is a truly needy family who is very appreciative already of our efforts.

Ethical Action: Holiday Giving Campaign
We have decided to provide as many items as we can from a needy family’s wish list. This is a family of a seriously ill cancer patient, Rachel, who just recently had a bone marrow transplant. Rachel has a 22 month old son and a significant other who is an undocumented Mexican immigrant. They have been through incredible trials, including losing their baby to try and save Rachel’s life. They have very little family resources, except an aunt, who has just let them know her help is coming to an end soon. Rachel’s significant other, Nelly, is her prime caregiver and cannot work right now. Her son, Charlie, calls Nelly “Dad” although he is not his biological father. Nelly has been very supportive throughout this whole ordeal. Rachel is 24 years old. We would like to give them a little material help and more importantly, some hope.
Below is Rachel’s wish list for her family. I have kept her original wording for the most part. We are using this web site link to track who can cover which items, so if you can give something, please click here and post a comment saying what item you can help with.
