Green Building in the 21st Century

Filed under: Events — admin @ 10:00 am

UPDATED Jan. 15th Meeting:

Speaker: Derek Simkowiak
Topic: Green Building in the 21st Century

This week is a presentation on environmentally friendly building technologies. This presentation will cover several technologies for earth-friendly home construction, including:

- low-impact, low-cost, high-quality construction materials (Rammed Earth, CEBs, CSEBs),
- roofing options and their environmental impact,
- solar energy (passive/active hydrolic and electrical systems, earth tubes, Trombe walls), and
- geothermal exchange.

These technologies result in comfortable, pest-resistant, easy-to-maintain homes that last centuries instead of decades. They also save a great deal on energy costs. These materials are primarily used to build low-cost housing in poor countries, but their environmental and economic benefits have brought them to the U.S. in recent years. This will be a projected presentation with pictures and some short video clips.

Doors open at 10:00am for chat and coffee, and the presentation begins at 10:30am.

Location:

Tallmadge Hamilton House
5225 15th Ave NE
Seattle, WA 98105

Time: 10:00am

Ethical Affirmations

Filed under: Events — admin @ 10:00 am

Affirmations! This is the ECS version of the New
Year’s Resolution. Bring a paper lantern decorated
with words expressing your ethical ideals for the
coming year. We’ll put tea-lights inside and go around
to talk about how we’re going to live these ideals.

On Ethical Affirmation Day, we are encouraged to
reflect upon our values and on our relationships with
others through which ideals come to light. How have
you been working to strengthen your relationships and
to build your ethical community? Where have you
succeeded, and where are the areas that you need to
develop? What would you like to work on in the coming
year?

After you have time to reflect on these ideals, we are
asking each person (who desires to participate) to
construct a paper lantern. Just decorate your lantern,
including the words expressing your affirmations for
the coming year, and then bring it to the Sunday
morning meeting. We’ll light the candles inside the
lanterns; then there will be a time for admiration,
for sharing, for reaffirmation of our Ethical ideals
and for playing with the dripping wax.

To make a lantern: Use any piece of paper (8x11 is big
enough) and decorate it, whatever way you wish. You
may cut designs in it, use paint, or just use colorful
paper. Include words that describe your goals for next
year. Then, just curve the paper around so the ends
meet. Tape or glue the ends together. At the meeting
we will place tea-lights inside and light them as each
of us explains the thoughts behind the words on the
lantern. Kids are welcome to make lanterns too.
Families may choose to make one lantern or one for
each person.
